Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to order a comprehensive investigation into the death of 21-year-old Himashree Boro, an Assam student whose body was recovered in Andhra Pradesh after she went missing during a train journey.
Boro, a resident of Kamrup district in Assam, had travelled to Visakhapatnam as part of a dance troupe to attend an event. She was returning to Guwahati aboard the Dibrugarh-bound Vivek Express when she reportedly went missing on October 6.
In separate communications to the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and the Railway Minister, Sarma called for a thorough, impartial and time-bound inquiry to establish the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death.
According to Sarma, Boro's family received a distressing message from her on October 6 in which she reportedly expressed fear over the presence of several men in the crowded train compartment. She was said to be the only woman in the coach.
Her bag was subsequently found in the train's S2 coach, while her body was recovered from a wooded area near Boddepalli in Srikakulam district, between Amadalavalasa and Ponduru railway stations.
The circumstances surrounding the incident have raised concerns, prompting the Government Railway Police (GRP) to investigate whether she accidentally fell from the moving train or was pushed.
Srikakulam district police have also formed a special team in coordination with the GRP to investigate the case and identify the men reportedly connected to the incident.
In his letter, Sarma highlighted the sequence of events leading to the student's disappearance and the subsequent recovery of her body, stating that the circumstances warranted a detailed investigation into the possibility of foul play.
The Assam Chief Minister emphasised the need to examine every aspect of the case, including Boro's boarding of the train, her reported distress message, her disappearance and the recovery of her body.
He urged the authorities to ensure that anyone found responsible for the incident is identified and brought to justice without delay.
The death has caused deep grief and concern in Assam, with the state government seeking a prompt and transparent investigation to establish the facts and ensure accountability.
