Early counting trends in Assam’s assembly elections indicate a competitive start, with Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi trailing behind BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami in the Jorhat Assembly constituency.
After the first round of counting, Goswami secured 4,993 votes, establishing a lead of 1,056 votes over Gogoi, who garnered 3,937 votes. Officials noted that only one of the 14 counting rounds has been completed, and the margin is expected to shift as the process continues.
The Jorhat constituency remains a closely watched contest, with both major parties keeping a close eye on the evolving numbers.
In another key development, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is leading comfortably in the Jalukbari Assembly constituency, providing an early advantage to the ruling alliance.
Across the state, initial trends show the BJP-led NDA ahead in around 80 seats, while the Congress-led opposition bloc is leading in 26 constituencies.
Voting for the assembly elections took place on April 9, recording a strong turnout of 85.96 percent among more than 2.5 crore eligible voters. A total of 722 candidates, including 59 women, are contesting these elections.
Among the major parties, Congress fielded 99 candidates, followed by the BJP with 90. Other participants include the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Asom Gana Parishad, Bodo Peoples’ Front, and several regional and national parties, along with 258 independent candidates.
