India and Nepal will launch the 19th edition of their annual joint military exercise ‘Suryakiran’ on Tuesday, November 25, in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand. The exercise will continue until December 8.
According to the Indian Army, the bilateral drill aims to enhance operational coordination between the two forces, particularly in jungle warfare and counter-terrorism operations in mountainous regions.
The exercise will also focus on the integration of niche technologies to improve interoperability and build on shared best practices.
The joint training underscores the long-standing defence partnership between India and Nepal and reflects the two nations’ commitment to regional peace, security and deepening military cooperation.
Held alternately in both countries, Suryakiran is one of the largest joint military exercises in the region. In the previous edition—conducted from December 31, 2024, to January 13 in Saljhandi, Nepal—334 Indian Army personnel participated. That exercise emphasised operational readiness, aviation support, medical training and environmental conservation.
Through these joint activities, troops from both nations refined their combat skills, improved coordination in challenging terrains and exchanged valuable operational experience.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted that India and Nepal share robust and long-standing cooperation in defence and security. The two armies enjoy a close relationship rooted in mutual trust and respect. India continues to support the modernisation of the Nepal Army through the supply of defence equipment and regular training programmes.
The Indian Army has also played a key role in providing humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) in Nepal, including during the 2015 earthquake and the COVID-19 pandemic.
