Mahalaya Marks Beginning of Devipaksha, People Offer Tarpan Across Tripura

Mahalaya was observed across Tripura on Saturday, marking the end of Pitri Paksha and the beginning of Devipaksha, heralding the arrival of Goddess Durga and the countdown to the much-awaited Durga Puja festival.

From the early hours of the morning, people gathered along riverbanks, ponds and other water bodies in Agartala and various parts of the state to perform tarpan, a traditional ritual of offering water and sesame seeds to departed ancestors. Devotees prayed for the peace of their ancestors' souls and paid homage to their forefathers with deep reverence.

As dawn broke, the riverbanks and water bodies witnessed people performing the age-old ritual, remembering their departed family members and seeking their blessings. The observance reflected the enduring cultural and religious significance of Mahalaya among Bengali communities.

Mahalaya holds a special place in Bengali culture as it signifies not only the conclusion of the period dedicated to remembering ancestors but also the symbolic beginning of preparations for Durga Puja. With the commencement of Devipaksha, the festive spirit has begun to build across Tripura.

Preparations for the annual celebration are gradually gaining momentum, with puja organisers busy making arrangements at community pandals. The familiar strains of Agamani songs, welcoming Goddess Durga to her earthly home, have further heightened the festive mood.

Traditionally, Pitri Paksha is dedicated to paying tribute to departed ancestors through offerings of water and sesame seeds. Its conclusion on Mahalaya is followed by Devipaksha, which carries profound spiritual and cultural significance for devotees.

With Mahalaya ushering in the auspicious period, people across Tripura have begun looking forward to Durga Puja, the biggest annual festival for the Bengali community, with devotion, anticipation and enthusiasm.
