Tripura Police have arrested two individuals in connection with the brutal assault of a 58-year-old man, Jaban Bhakta Jamatia, in the Kupilong area under Killa Police Station in Gomati district. 

The victim, who had been accused by some locals of practising witchcraft, succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.

Police identified the arrested suspects as Chandra Kumar Jamatia (58) and Kamala Devi Jamatia (48).

Gomati District Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar visited the victim’s residence on Thursday. According to the SP, Jaban Bhakta Jamatia was forcibly taken from his home around midnight on November 25.

“He was allegedly assaulted with rods and bamboo sticks by several villagers. Police reached the location soon after receiving information and shifted him to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he passed away on November 26,” the SP said.

Kumar, accompanied by Udaipur Sub-Divisional Police Officer Debanjali Roy, confirmed that a detailed investigation is underway. Authorities have identified additional suspects and stated that further arrests are expected.

“Strict action will be taken against all individuals involved in the incident,” police officials assured.
