Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a special operation on Sunday morning in Katoa Chhara, Ward No. 2 of Balichhara ADC Village, under the Churaibari police station area of North District.
The operation, led by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), involved a large contingent of police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel.
During the raid, authorities destroyed nearly 5,000 cannabis plants spread across a vast hilly area. Police sources revealed that a group of local individuals had been engaged in illegal cultivation of ganja in the region for quite some time.
According to local residents, the illicit trade had continued unabated due to the alleged backing of an influential person, which had prevented effective administrative action in the past. However, following concrete intelligence inputs, the police finally took firm action.
Speaking about the operation, the SDPO stated,“Police will continue such operations against illegal cannabis cultivation. The administration is determined to root out drug abuse and related criminal activities from society.”
Locals expressed relief and satisfaction after the successful raid, saying that regular police surveillance could help maintain peace and safety in the area. However, some residents also alleged that a section of the intelligence police had earlier ignored the ongoing illegal cultivation despite being aware of it.
The successful completion of the operation has brought a sense of security and hope to the community.
