Tripura Leader of the Opposition and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury on Wednesday strongly condemned the alleged vandalism of a party office in Jogendranagar and accused the ruling BJP of creating an atmosphere of political intimidation in the state.

Chaudhury made the remarks while visiting the CPI(M) office in Jogendranagar, Agartala, which, according to the party, was vandalised on Monday. He said the CPI(M) has begun systematically documenting incidents involving alleged attacks on its offices, leaders and workers.

The Opposition leader alleged that the ruling party frequently speaks about democracy but its actions tell a different story.

“Democracy cannot survive when political opponents are targeted and their offices are attacked. The people of Tripura are watching what is happening, and they will give their response at the appropriate time,” Chaudhury said.

He also criticised the government over the recent increase in electricity tariffs and other issues concerning public expenditure. According to him, people across the state have been expressing dissatisfaction, including through social media.

Chaudhury alleged that the government was attempting to divert public attention by announcing promises such as 100 per cent subsidy on electricity tariffs.

“People will understand the reality of these announcements with time. Public issues cannot be hidden through political campaigns or new promises,” he said.

Referring to a BJP programme reportedly held near the CPI(M) office following the alleged vandalism, Chaudhury questioned the political conduct of the ruling party.

He claimed that the incident reflected a growing disregard for democratic norms and accused the BJP of damaging the state’s political environment.

“If the CPI(M) is responsible for initiating any such attack, let it be proved. We are ready to face the facts. But repeated allegations without evidence cannot change the truth,” he said, adding that the party office had allegedly faced attacks on several occasions.

Chaudhury further said that the CPI(M) would maintain its own record of political violence and alleged attacks.

“We do not know what records the police will maintain, but we are maintaining our own diary. Every incident will be documented,” he said.

Issuing a strong warning to those allegedly involved in attacks on CPI(M) workers and offices, Chaudhury said that the party would continue to pursue the matter through democratic and legal means.

“No one involved in such attacks will be spared. We are keeping records of everything, and the consequences will follow,” he added.
