Tripura Congress President Asish Kumar Saha on Friday alleged that a deliberate attempt is being made to distort the country’s history and erase the sacrifices of the leaders who fought for India’s independence.

The Tripura Pradesh Congress on Friday joined the rest of the nation in celebrating the 136th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, with a commemorative programme held at the Congress Bhavan in Agartala.

Senior Congress leaders, including State Congress President Asish Kumar Saha, former Minister and MLA Sudip Roy Barman, MLA Gopal Chandra Roy, and several party workers, attended the programme.

Addressing reporters after the event, Saha said the Tripura Congress paid heartfelt tribute to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, whose birth anniversary is observed across the country as Children’s Day.

“Nehru had immense love for children and worked tirelessly for their welfare. He believed that children are the future of the nation. His contributions remain significant even today, and people can truly understand their value now,” Saha said.

He further described Nehru as the architect of modern India, noting that the Five-Year Plans introduced under his leadership laid the foundation for large-scale development and positioned India prominently on the global map.

Saha went on to say, “On this day, we must reaffirm our commitment to protecting the nation’s history. At present, there are attempts to erase the contributions made by our freedom fighters. As a freedom fighter himself, Nehru played a crucial role in India’s independence movement and even faced imprisonment. Yet today, there is a conspiracy to undermine this history and the legacy of those who fought for the nation’s freedom. There are also efforts to weaken the sanctity of the Constitution written by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.”

In an indirect reference to the RSS-BJP, Saha alleged that attempts are being made to distort historical facts and diminish the contributions of freedom fighters. “The Congress is working to unite the common people so they can raise their voices against any such attempts. We must collectively uphold the vision of these great leaders and prevent efforts that seek to divide society,” he added.
