The Agartala Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Office has denied permission to the Youth Tipra Federation (YTF) to hold a proposed mass rally at Vivekananda Ground, citing serious concerns over public safety, congestion, and interference with an ongoing international event.

In an official communication addressed to Suraj Debbarma, a representative of YTF, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Deba Prasad Roy stated that half of the Vivekananda Ground is currently occupied by the ongoing International Expo, which has drawn large crowds, including women, children, and international delegates.

The SDPO’s letter warned that holding a rally in the remaining portion of the venue could create severe congestion and even lead to a stampede-like situation, thereby putting visitors and public property at risk.

“Conducting a mass rally simultaneously in the remaining portion of the ground may lead to serious congestion and the possibility of a stampede-like situation, thereby endangering the safety and well-being of visitors,” the letter noted.

Authorities further highlighted that Vivekananda Ground, being located in the heart of the city, is surrounded by key roads essential for city traffic and hospital access. A massive turnout, as anticipated by the organizers, could result in major traffic disruptions and obstruction of emergency services.

The police have, however, offered an alternative option to the organizers.

“You may submit a fresh proposal suggesting an alternate venue or date, which will be duly considered in consultation with relevant authorities,” the SDPO wrote, emphasizing that the administration is open to dialogue while prioritizing public safety and order.

The letter concludes with an appeal for cooperation from the Youth Tipra Federation, acknowledging their right to organize democratic activities but urging them to ensure peace and safety in the city.

The Youth Tipra Federation (YTF), a prominent youth organization advocating for indigenous rights and state issues, has not yet issued an official response to the decision.
