President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Manipur on a two-day visit and is set to honour the state’s iconic women warriors during the 86th Nupi Lal Day commemoration on Friday.
The President will pay homage at the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex in Imphal, recognising the women who spearheaded two major uprisings against British rule in 1904 and 1939. These historic movements—jointly known as Nupi Lal—continue to stand as enduring symbols of Manipuri women’s resilience, leadership, and collective strength.
After the ceremony in Imphal, President Murmu will proceed to Senapati district, a key Naga-majority region, where she is expected to address a public gathering. She will also lay foundation stones for several new development initiatives and formally inaugurate multiple completed projects aimed at boosting infrastructure and overall socio-economic growth in the district.
In anticipation of the high-profile visit, extensive preparations have taken place across Imphal since Wednesday. The approximately 7-km route from Bir Tikendrajit International Airport to the memorial complex has been repaired and freshly painted, with flags, banners, and large welcome hoardings lining the stretch to receive the President’s convoy.
This visit marks the second major high-level presence in Manipur within the last three months. Prime Minister Narendra Modi toured the state on September 13, reiterating the Centre’s commitment to advancing development under the Viksit Bharat vision. During that trip, he inaugurated 17 projects worth ₹1,200 crore—including new Manipur Bhawans in Delhi and Kolkata, the Civil Secretariat, the Police Headquarters, and the SEZ building at Mantripukhri—while also laying foundation stones for 19 additional initiatives totalling ₹7,300 crore across multiple districts.
President Murmu’s engagements today are expected to underscore both the legacy of Manipuri women’s historic resistance movements and the Centre’s ongoing efforts toward development, unity, and restoration of peace in the state.
