Tensions escalated in the Mangalkhali area of Dharmanagar under North District after two brothers, Khaled Ahmed and Junaid, were attacked on March 21, allegedly by Moinuddin, Sabuddin, Haider Ali, and Jubel Ahmed over a longstanding enmity. Khaled Ahmed succumbed to his injuries, while Junaid remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Angry local residents accused the police of failing to arrest the suspects despite having information about their whereabouts. In protest, residents blocked roads and set fire to the homes of three of the accused on Thursday, causing significant damage. The Dharmanagar fire brigade rushed to the scene, but the houses were reduced to ashes before the flames could be fully controlled.
Authorities, including the Sub-Divisional Police Officer and the Additional Superintendent of Police, visited the site to speak with protesters and assured that the accused would be apprehended promptly. Following these assurances, residents cleared the road blockade.
A heavy police deployment has been stationed in the area to prevent further unrest. Locals remain anxious, awaiting swift action to arrest the suspects and restore peace in the neighborhood.
