State expands focus on livestock sector to boost rural livelihoods: Minister

Tripura is placing greater emphasis on livestock-based enterprises as a means of generating sustainable employment, strengthening household incomes and improving the rural economy, Animal Resources Development Department (ARDD) Minister Sudhangshu Das said on Thursday.

Addressing a national conclave on livestock and livelihoods, Das said livestock farming has increasingly become an important component of the state’s rural economy, particularly by providing income-generating opportunities to women and unemployed youth.

He said activities including poultry farming, piggery, duck rearing and cattle farming have witnessed significant expansion in Tripura, enabling a growing number of rural residents to establish their own sources of income.

According to the minister, livestock-based enterprises are helping many young people move towards financial independence instead of depending solely on conventional employment opportunities. Women, too, are increasingly participating in these activities and contributing to the economic well-being of their families.

Das highlighted the contribution of the National Livestock Mission (NLM) in promoting entrepreneurship in the sector. He said the initiative has enabled several unemployed youths to take up livestock-related businesses and build sustainable livelihoods, while appreciating the support extended by the Government of India.

The minister also stressed the importance of knowledge-sharing and capacity building among those working at the grassroots level. He said the national conclave would offer veterinary professionals, including Mobile Veterinary Officers (MVOs), Pashu Sakhis associated with the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM), and women engaged in livestock activities an opportunity to exchange experiences and learn new practices.

He expressed hope that the participants would return with improved knowledge and innovative ideas that could be applied to further expand livestock-based economic activities across the state.

Das said strengthening livestock enterprises could play a vital role in creating employment, empowering women and making rural communities more economically resilient.

ARDD Secretary S. Prabhu and Director Niraj Kumar Chanchal were also present at the programme.
