Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader C. Joseph Vijay on Monday met DMK President and former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at his residence in Alwarpet, marking a notable political moment in the state’s evolving post-election landscape.
The meeting came shortly after Vijay attended the oath-taking ceremony of newly elected Members of the Legislative Assembly in Chennai. It has attracted significant attention given the shifting political equations following the recent Assembly elections.
In the polls, TVK made a strong debut by emerging as the single largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly. However, the party fell short of the majority mark, leading to discussions with other political groups for support to form the government.
Subsequently, the Congress extended support to TVK and exited its earlier alignment with the DMK-led bloc. Other parties, including the CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML, also came forward with outside support, helping Vijay secure the numbers required to form the government.
With this backing, Vijay took oath as Chief Minister on May 10 in a ceremony held in Chennai.
Soon after assuming office, he signed key government files initiating welfare measures, including free electricity schemes for eligible households, enhanced women’s safety programmes, and strengthened anti-drug enforcement initiatives across the state. He also held early meetings with senior officials focusing on administrative priorities and law-and-order issues.
Following his swearing-in, Vijay visited memorials and met social leaders, including paying respects at the Periyar memorial, acknowledging the influence of social reform movements in Tamil Nadu’s political history.
Meanwhile, proceedings in the newly constituted Assembly began on Monday, with political activity picking up pace. TVK MLA J.C.D. Prabhakar submitted his nomination for the Speaker’s post as the House prepared for key procedural elections.
