Prashanta Banik, a schoolteacher from Champamura village under Sepahijala district, has emerged as a successful young agricultural entrepreneur through lemon cultivation. His inspiring journey is now motivating many in the region to explore farming as a viable source of income.
Around three and a half years ago, Prashanta established a lemon orchard using modern cultivation techniques. Today, his garden is filled with clusters of fresh green lemons hanging from the trees, reflecting his dedication and hard work.
The success of his venture has been evident not only in production but also in marketing. Wholesale buyers directly purchase lemons from his farm, eliminating the hassle of market distribution. He has been selling each lemon at a price ranging from ₹5 to ₹8, which has brought him significant financial returns.
Prashanta shared that lemon farming requires relatively low investment but offers high profitability. His initial cost, including saplings, land preparation, fertilizers, and other inputs, was around ₹20,000. Within a year of planting, the trees began bearing fruit, and with proper care, they can continue to produce for 10 to 15 years.
During a visit to his orchard, trees were seen heavily laden with 200–250 lemons each, creating a visually striking and productive landscape. Last year alone, he earned approximately ₹40,000 from lemon sales and expects even higher returns this year.
Highlighting the benefits of lemon farming, Prashanta noted that lemons are in demand year-round due to their high Vitamin C content and health benefits, particularly in boosting immunity and preventing viral infections.
In addition to his teaching profession, his agricultural success has set an example for unemployed youth, demonstrating how farming can create sustainable livelihoods.
He also acknowledged the support from the Agriculture Department, which provided financial assistance, training, and ongoing guidance to encourage farmers to adopt lemon cultivation and other natural farming practices.
Prashanta Banik’s story stands as a testament to how innovation, proper guidance, and dedication can transform small-scale farming into a profitable and inspiring enterprise.
