Ramchandraghat witnessed heightened tension after allegations of an attack on the house of BJP Yuva Morcha Mandal President Rupak Ghosh. In protest against the incident, workers and supporters of the BJP Mahila Morcha staged a road blockade at Ramchandraghat Bazaar on Friday.
According to allegations, around 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, nearly a hundred supporters and workers of Tipra Motha allegedly attacked the residence of Rupak Ghosh, the Mandal President of the BJP Yuva Morcha in Ramchandraghat. In the attack, Rupak Ghosh and his elderly mother, Meera Ghosh, were reportedly seriously injured. They were later rescued and admitted to a hospital for treatment.
BJP leaders claim that the attack was carried out to disrupt a bike rally planned by the Yuva Morcha on March 8 in Ramchandraghat. They further alleged that opposition parties are resorting to such violent acts out of fear as the BJP is gaining strength ahead of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections.
The BJP leadership also claimed that many workers and supporters from Tipra Motha have recently joined the BJP, which has created concern among opposition parties. They further alleged that BJP workers and supporters have been targeted in several similar attacks in the past.
Following the incident, tension has been prevailing across the Ramchandraghat area. As part of the protest, BJP Mahila Morcha workers and supporters blocked the road at Ramchandraghat Bazaar, demanding immediate action from the police.
The protesters alleged that despite submitting CCTV footage of the incident to the police, no accused individuals have been detained so far. They said the police had been given a deadline until 9:00 a.m. on Friday to take action against the accused, but no concrete steps have been taken yet.
The protesters warned that if the accused are not arrested immediately, they will launch a larger movement in the coming days.
