Tipra Motha MLA Paul Dangshu has condemned an alleged incident of racial harassment involving an indigenous youth from Tripura in Delhi, demanding swift legal action against those responsible.
The MLA’s reaction came after a video purportedly showing a content creator identified as Amir Shokeen allegedly targeting the youth with racial remarks and abusive language circulated publicly.
Expressing strong displeasure over the incident, Dangshu said that mocking someone’s identity, making derogatory comments about their place of origin and using offensive gestures cannot be justified as entertainment or content creation.
According to the MLA, the young man was allegedly subjected to racial taunts, including being called “Chinese,” while derogatory language targeting Tripura was also reportedly used. Dangshu described such conduct as an affront to the dignity of the people of Tripura and the entire Northeast.
He stressed that freedom of expression must not be misused as an excuse to humiliate or racially discriminate against fellow citizens. He also underlined the need to ensure that people from the Northeast are treated with dignity and respect wherever they live, study or work in the country.
Calling for firm intervention, Dangshu urged the Delhi Police and the Delhi Chief Minister’s Office to take appropriate legal action against the individual allegedly involved in the incident. He emphasised that accountability in such cases is essential to help protect young people from the Northeast against racial discrimination and harassment.
The incident has once again brought attention to concerns over racial prejudice faced by people from the northeastern states in other parts of the country.
The allegations surrounding the video are yet to be independently verified, and further details regarding any police complaint or official action were not immediately available.
