Tripura CM Slams Opposition Over ‘Failure’ to Develop Tripura, urges to join BJP

Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Monday launched a sharp attack on the previous Left Front government, accusing it of failing to ensure the development and welfare of the people despite remaining in power for years. He said the present BJP-led government was working to accelerate development across Tripura, with a focus on every sector and every section of society.

Dr. Saha made the remarks while inaugurating and laying foundation stones for 21 development projects worth over Rs 40 crore in Unakoti district.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the state was witnessing a continuous push for development under the BJP-led government, with new projects being launched across Tripura. He questioned the development claims made during the previous Left Front regime, alleging that the government had left behind a debt burden of around Rs 13,000 crore instead of the promised “Swarna Yug” or golden era.

“Before our government came to power in 2018, we used to hear that a golden era was prevailing. But when we took charge, what did we find? Not gold, but a debt of Rs 13,000 crore. Had the previous government carried out meaningful development work, it would have been easier for us to move forward,” Dr. Saha said.

He asserted that the BJP government was committed to translating development into tangible benefits for ordinary people, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision. According to him, development must encompass education, healthcare, communication infrastructure and the overall socio-economic progress of the state.

“The double-engine government is moving ahead at high speed. Opposition parties should join the development process instead of misleading people. India is progressing under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Tripura is moving forward on the same path. We must work together to build a New India and a New Tripura,” he said.

Taking another swipe at the opposition, Dr. Saha alleged that parties which had earlier enjoyed opportunities to transform people's lives had failed to deliver and were now gradually losing their political relevance. Referring to the opposition's recent political activities, he said they were attempting to establish their presence rather than presenting a constructive vision for the state's development.

The Chief Minister also accused the opposition of creating confusion among people over development-related issues. He maintained that the government was working despite challenges such as prolonged rainfall and a limited construction season.

“We face difficulties because of the rains. This year, rainfall started as early as March, leaving us with only around four months to carry out work. Despite these challenges, we are continuing our efforts. I have repeatedly taken up these issues with the Centre,” he said.

Emphasising the need for long-term planning, Dr. Saha said development must reach every sector, beginning at the grassroots level. He highlighted the importance of empowering women, farmers, economically weaker sections and young people, stating that the government's efforts should benefit both the present generation and those to come.
