Tripura is set to witness two consecutive kidney transplants on March 30 and 31 at the Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital, conducted under the guidance of leading kidney transplant specialists.
The Tripura Health Department credits this achievement to the dedicated efforts of Chief Minister Professor (Dr) Manik Saha, which has made life-saving kidney transplant procedures increasingly accessible within the state. Over the past two years, patients suffering from kidney-related ailments in Tripura have benefitted significantly from these interventions.
According to officials, five successful kidney transplants have already been performed in succession at Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital in Tripura, as well as at Shija Hospital and Research Institute in Manipur. The state marked its first kidney transplant on July 8, 2024, and the fifth was completed on November 4, 2025.
Of the two patients scheduled for the upcoming surgeries, one is 33 years old, while the other is 36. Specialists from Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital will collaborate with experts from Shija Hospital and Research Institute, Manipur, to perform the procedures.
Both donors and recipients are currently undergoing comprehensive pre-transplant evaluations at Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital. The final decision to proceed will rest with the relevant authorization committee, following established protocols. As part of the assessment, careful matching of donor and recipient kidneys will be conducted to maximize the chances of a successful transplant.
