Tripura MP Biplab Kumar Deb has urged the central government to upgrade Agartala’s Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport to an international airport.
He raised the demand in Parliament today, addressing it directly to the Union Minister of Civil Aviation.
Highlighting the airport’s growing importance, Deb said that MBB Airport serves as a crucial gateway for passengers traveling to the northeastern region. According to available data, the airport currently has the capacity to handle 1,000 domestic and 200 international passengers during peak hours. It is equipped with 20 check-in counters and can accommodate up to 3 million passengers annually.
Deb further informed the House that the Tripura government has already provided ₹18.85 crore to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to facilitate the start of international flight operations.
He strongly urged the Civil Aviation Minister to coordinate with the Ministry of Home Affairs to expedite the notification of an immigration check-post at MBB Airport and prioritize the process of declaring it an international airport.
