Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath today informed that Tripura has set a target of 500 Mega Watt of renewable-energy capacity by 2030.

Minister said this while addressing the launching Event of Tripura Clean Energy Roadmap, Green Skilling Program and TREAT Initiative Workshop, at Hotel Polo Tower, in Agartala.

Minister said that the energy sector is undergoing a profound transformation across the world. Renewable energy, particularly solar energy, is no longer merely an alternative source of power. It has emerged as a major driver of economic growth, technological innovation, employment generation and sustainable development.

“It is in this context that I am particularly pleased to speak about the UTSA – Unnayan through Transformative Solar Applications, the flagship Green Energy Skill Development Programme of the Government of Tripura. UTSA is an important initiative aimed at creating skilled manpower for the rapidly expanding solar-energy sector of our State”, he said.

Minister said that under this programme, the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA), in collaboration with the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM) and the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), is implementing training programmes such as Suryamitra and Solar PV Technician.

“The programme is backed by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, and is also aligned with the Asian Development Bank (ADB)-supported programme for transforming renewable energy in Tripura”, he said.

Power Minister informed that in past few years, Programmes such as PM-KUSUM, PM-DevINE, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, PM-JANMAN, Grameen Bazaar Alok Jyoti Prakalpa, solar micro-grids, green hydrogen, micro hydel, hydrokinetics, pumped storage, battery storage and biogas initiatives are bringing clean energy closer to farmers, households, public institutions and communities.

“Tripura has achieved around 58.76 Mega Watt of renewable-energy capacity. Under PM-KUSUM, 9,401 solar pumps have been installed and another 1,709 are underway, supporting nearly 18,802 acres. Solarisation of 1,341 grid-connected pumps is also generating 4.40 million units annually, saving around Rs 76.65 lakh and enabling farmers to become clean-energy producers”, he said.

Minister said that solar micro-grids are bringing clean energy to approximately 9,762 families under PM-DevINE and 1,703 households under PM-JANMAN. 

“Tripura’s achievements in the field of renewable energy have also received national recognition. The Prime Minister has himself highlighted Tripura’s achievements in renewable energy in his “Mann Ki Baat” programme, which is a matter of great pride for the State. The State was also recognised as the Best Performing State among the North Eastern States for installing the highest number of solar pumps under PM-KUSUM. In addition, Tripura received the SKOCH Power & Energy Silver Award 2025 for its 2.09 MW solar micro-grid project”, said Minister.

Minister informed that the State has set a target of 500 Mega Watt of renewable-energy capacity by 2030 and this includes green villages, rooftop solar on Government buildings and residential premises, ground-mounted solar power plants, solar micro-grids, decentralised renewable-energy livelihood applications and other off-grid solutions.

“That is why skill development is at the heart of our approach. The UTSA programme is designed not merely to make young people employable, but also to encourage them to become entrepreneurs and service providers in the solar-energy sector”, he said.

He said that UTSA creates the skilled manpower and the rooftop solar programmes create the market.

"The UTSA programme directly supports the Tripura Energy Vision 2030 and the 6Ds Clean Energy Road Map 2025–2035, particularly by developing solar PV skills applicable to rooftop solar, micro and mini-grids, battery energy storage systems and renewable-energy livelihood programmes”, he added.
