Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Tuesday underscored the crucial role of the media in bridging the gap between the government and the public, emphasizing that truthful and objective reporting fosters greater public trust and acceptance.
Inaugurating a three-day media workshop at the Agartala Press Club, jointly organized by the Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA) Department and the Agartala Press Club, Dr. Saha said the media serves as a vital link between the administration and the people.
“The media’s active participation ensures a transparent, dynamic, and reliable governance system for the citizens of Tripura,” the Chief Minister said. “I always try to ensure there is no interference in the media. Whenever I see breaking news—particularly on law and order—I immediately inquire and take necessary action. Similarly, if there is any news concerning a department, I try to address it promptly. This approach has proven very effective. A strong monitoring system can resolve many problems.”
Highlighting the importance of journalistic responsibility, Dr. Saha noted that while media freedom is essential, journalists also bear greater accountability. “Society expects a lot from journalists. Therefore, they need to be efficient, responsible, and objective in their work,” he added.
The Chief Minister further stressed the need for effective implementation of existing laws through proper monitoring mechanisms. Referring to a recent seminar organized by the Defence Department to raise awareness about cybercrime, Dr. Saha said such initiatives strengthen cooperation between the government and the media.
“The media plays an important role in pointing out areas where the government needs improvement. This helps us function better and deliver good governance to every citizen,” he said.
Director of the ICA Department Bimbisar Bhattacharya, Agartala Press Club President Pranab Sarkar, Secretary Ramakanta Dey, and other senior journalists and media professionals attended the inaugural session.
The workshop, which brings together journalists from print, electronic, web, and photo media across Tripura, will continue till November 6.
