Veteran Actor Nana Patekar Dies at 75 After Cardiac Arrest in Goa

Veteran actor Nana Patekar, one of Indian cinema’s most acclaimed performers, died on Thursday morning at the age of 75 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa. His son, Malhar Patekar, confirmed the actor’s death.

Patekar was found unconscious at his residence in the early hours of Thursday and was rushed to Manipal Hospital. Doctors continued cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for around 45 minutes but were unable to revive him. He was declared dead at approximately 5:20 am.

The news of his death has sent shockwaves across the Indian film industry, with tributes beginning to pour in from actors, filmmakers, political leaders and fans.

Born Vishwanath Patekar, Nana Patekar built a remarkable career spanning Hindi and Marathi cinema, theatre and filmmaking. Known for his intense screen presence, powerful dialogue delivery and ability to portray complex characters, he earned widespread acclaim for performances in films including Parinda, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi, Salaam Bombay!, Natsamrat and Welcome.

A multiple National Film Award winner, Patekar was also honoured with the Padma Shri in 2013 for his contribution to cinema and the arts. Beyond acting, he worked as a writer and director and was also known for his social initiatives.

His last rites are scheduled to be held in Pune, with reports stating that he will be accorded a state funeral.

The death of Patekar marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in Indian cinema, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances that influenced generations of actors and audiences.
