Women turn out in greater numbers than men in Tripura Village Committee polls

Women recorded a higher turnout than men in the recently concluded Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), indicating strong participation by female voters in the grassroots electoral process.

State Election Commissioner P.K. Chakraborty said on Tuesday that 2,70,897 women exercised their franchise, compared with 2,62,911 men, during polling held on September 28.

The overall voter turnout, including votes cast through Election Duty Voting (EDV), stood at 81.29 per cent. Of the total votes polled, 5,33,808 were cast at polling stations, while another 6,628 votes were recorded through EDV, taking the total to 5,40,436.

Among the districts, South Tripura recorded the highest turnout at 86.08 per cent, while West Tripura registered the lowest at 72.64 per cent, the SEC said.

The election results also established the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) as the leading force in the Village Committees. The party won 3,428 seats, securing 46.76 per cent of the votes. The BJP finished second with 859 seats and a vote share of 28 per cent.

The Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) won 33 seats, polling 2.74 per cent of the votes. The CPI(M) secured 87 seats, while Independents won 173 seats and the Congress managed 14 seats. Three seats remained vacant.

At the Village Committee level, Tipra Motha secured majority in 457 VCs, compared with 94 VCs where the BJP emerged as the majority party. The CPI(M) and IPFT secured majorities in two VCs each, while 31 VCs fell into the independent category, where no clear majority emerged or unaffiliated candidates dominated.

According to the final vote-share figures released by the SEC, the CPI(M) polled 12.90 per cent, Independents 7.74 per cent and Congress 1.86 per cent.

Chakraborty said counting began at 8 am on October 5 at 44 counting locations covering 45 counting halls across 44 RD Blocks. While counting was completed at most centres by evening, the process at Manu RD Block continued until the early hours of October 6.

Security was maintained through a three-tier arrangement involving central security forces, Tripura Police and Tripura State Rifles. No security-related incident was reported inside the counting halls.

The SEC said minor tensions reported before counting in Salema, Tulasikhar and Kathalia RD Blocks were brought under control promptly through police and administrative intervention.
