Controversy erupts as OC of Tripura Police covers lotus-shaped fountain, sparks public outrage

A recent move by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kamalpur Police Station has sparked widespread criticism and public outrage after he allegedly ordered the covering of a lotus-shaped fountain installed under the Kamalpur Nagar Panchayat's beautification project.

Sources said that the OC reportedly claimed the fountain, designed in the shape of a lotus, represented a particular political party — a reference to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), whose symbol is also the lotus.

However, many citizens, public representatives, and local leaders have condemned this action, asserting that the lotus is India's national flower and a revered cultural symbol that transcends political affiliations.

“The lotus stands for purity, resilience, and beauty — it is the spirit of India, not a symbol exclusive to any political party,” said a local resident, expressing disappointment over the incident.

“This action reflects a deep misunderstanding and misrepresentation of a national symbol.”

The fountain, a part of a government-initiated beautification effort meant to enhance public spaces for the community’s benefit, had received appreciation from locals prior to the controversy.

Critics argue that a government servant, especially a police officer, must uphold neutrality and act in the interest of the public without being influenced by personal or political interpretations. Many have called for accountability and clarity on what authority permitted such an act.

“This is a clear case of overreach. No individual has the right to distort the intent of a public project based on personal bias,” said a civic rights advocate.

Citizens are now demanding a formal explanation from the police department and the immediate restoration of the fountain's original form.

Some are also urging state authorities to take disciplinary action against the OC for what is being seen as an arbitrary and politically tinted move.
