US Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday underscored the significance of fair trade and shared national interests, stating that India stands as a trusted partner of the United States.
Speaking at a high-profile event in Jaipur, Vance reflected on America’s shifting economic landscape, especially the decline of its manufacturing towns, while stressing the need for partnerships grounded in mutual respect and common goals.
“Our manufacturing communities have faced deep economic challenges over the past few years. Fair trade partnerships are essential—and in India, the United States has a friend,” said Vance.
At the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vance shared a personal story about his upbringing in Middletown, Ohio—a once-thriving manufacturing town that saw the erosion of its middle class with the decline of factory jobs.
“It’s not a massive city like Jaipur, but Middletown was a place where people built their lives through hard work and generational craftsmanship,” Vance said. “My grandparents moved there from the hills of West Virginia in search of the American dream.”
Recalling his family's modest beginnings, Vance spoke of the values that shaped his life—hard work, faith, patriotism, and resilience. “My grandfather’s job came with a decent wage and a pension. That generation built America’s middle class,” he noted.
He lamented how shifts in economic policy later undermined this prosperity. “Subsequent leaders abandoned the very principles that created that success. They neglected the importance of a strong industrial base, and towns like mine paid the price—factories closed, jobs disappeared.”
Vance drew a parallel between his personal story and the broader American experience, saying, “Millions of Americans lived this same reality. But I believe they’ve awakened in time. Now, we want trade built on fairness and mutual respect. We want pride in our heritage—not shame.”
He affirmed the administration's commitment to reviving American industry and securing meaningful trade relationships. “Our President, Donald Trump, has been unwavering on these issues for decades. He is committed to ensuring good jobs and opportunity for every American.”
Addressing the future of global trade, Vance said the U.S. is seeking partners who value workers and are aligned on economic and strategic goals. “We’re not looking for uniformity—we’re looking for unity in purpose. India shares those values. That’s why I’m thrilled to be here.”
Concluding his remarks, Vance highlighted the need to reshape global trade into a system that is “open, balanced, stable, and fair.” He added, “In India, the United States finds not just a partner—but a true friend. Now is the time to strengthen that bond.”
