Trump announces ceasefire between India and Pakistan

U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday announced that India and Pakistan have agreed to a "full and immediate ceasefire," following intense diplomatic engagement led by the United States.

While President Trump did not share details about the negotiations, he posted the announcement on Truth Social, his proprietary social media platform.

“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire," Trump wrote.

"Congratulations to both countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

In a separate statement, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio provided further context.

He confirmed that he and Vice President J.D. Vance held extensive discussions over the past 48 hours with key Indian and Pakistani leaders. These included Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Pakistan’s Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Pakistan’s NSA Asim Malik, and Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir.

“We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif for their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace,” Secretary Rubio stated. “Both governments have agreed not only to an immediate ceasefire but also to begin a dialogue on a broader set of issues at a mutually agreed neutral location.”

Although Rubio avoided explicitly calling it “mediation,” he offered U.S. support in facilitating constructive dialogue aimed at de-escalation and future conflict prevention. Trump, however, directly referred to U.S. mediation in his statement.
