Agartala was brought to a standstill after just about an hour of continuous heavy rainfall, as several major and busy roads across the city were submerged under knee-deep water. The sudden waterlogging severely disrupted daily life, affecting office commuters, school and college students, as well as traders.
The morning downpour led to widespread inconvenience, with key market areas, main roads, and low-lying localities witnessing severe water accumulation. Traffic movement was badly affected, resulting in long snarls in several parts of the city. In many areas, pedestrians were seen wading through waterlogged streets.
Local residents have raised concerns over the city’s poor drainage system, pointing out that even moderate rainfall is enough to cause severe flooding. They argue that despite claims of development under the “Smart City” initiative, the same old problems resurface every monsoon.
Meanwhile, the weather department has forecast thunderstorms with gusty winds and heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next three days. Wind speeds may reach 60 to 80 kmph in some districts. Authorities have stated that they are monitoring the situation, while demands for urgent and effective drainage solutions continue to grow.
