In a major breakthrough in the sensational suicide case of Dharmanagar Ward No. 5 councillor and Yuva Morcha Mandal president Rahul Kishore Roy, police have arrested the main accused, Kankan Chowdhury.

The sudden and mysterious death of Rahul Kishore Roy, a well-known youth leader and political figure in Dharmanagar, had triggered widespread shock and outrage across the region. Following the incident, Roy’s wife, Ananya Bhattacharjee, lodged an FIR at Dharmanagar Police Station.

The case was registered as:

DMN P.S Case No. 27/26 dated 05-05-2026
Under Sections 329(4)/117(2)/351(3)/108/3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

Acting on the complaint, police launched an intensive investigation into the case. Based on confidential information, a special police team conducted a raid and successfully arrested accused Kankan Chowdhury from his residence in the Bhairab Sarani area of Dharmanagar.

Officer-in-Charge of Dharmanagar Police Station, Meena Rani Debbarma, confirmed the arrest and stated that the accused has been charged primarily with abetment to suicide. She added that the police are thoroughly investigating whether there was any larger conspiracy or additional provocation behind Roy’s death.

Police sources said the accused will be produced before the court on Sunday, where investigators are expected to seek police remand for further interrogation.

It may be recalled that Rahul Kishore Roy, councillor of Ward No. 5 of Dharmanagar Municipal Council, was found hanging inside his room. The incident sparked massive public reaction across Tripura, with the family alleging from the beginning that the death was not a simple suicide but a mysterious and suspicious case.

According to family members, Roy had been under severe mental pressure due to internal political conflicts and had allegedly received threats to his life. Demanding justice, his wife and relatives filed a written complaint seeking the arrest and exemplary punishment of all those involved.

Meanwhile, on May 13, the North Tripura District and Sessions Court rejected the anticipatory bail petitions of three accused persons in connection with the case. The court observed that the allegations were extremely serious and required a detailed investigation.

Police officials have stated that the investigation is progressing rapidly and that all possible angles related to the case are being examined.
