Traffic movement on a key stretch of National Highway 208 came to a standstill on Tuesday morning after two loaded trucks became trapped in large potholes along the road between Erarpura and South Manikbhandar Bazaar in Kamalpur in Dhalai District
Continuous rainfall further damaged the already deteriorated roadway, leaving several sections covered in mud and water. The situation worsened when the two trucks got stuck in the middle of the highway, blocking traffic and causing severe congestion.
The disruption affected major routes linking Kamalpur with Ambassa, Kumarghat, and Agartala via Kailashahar. Hundreds of vehicles remained stranded for hours on both sides of the road, creating difficulties for commuters, traders, students, and patients.
Many students failed to reach their schools and colleges on time, while office-goers and people travelling for urgent purposes were forced to seek alternative routes.
Local residents blamed the recurring problem on the poor condition of the highway, alleging that authorities have failed to carry out permanent repair work despite repeated complaints. They said the road develops large potholes every year, and even light rainfall turns the stretch into a dangerous route for motorists.
NH-208 serves as an important link connecting the districts of Dhalai, Unakoti, and North Tripura. Residents have once again urged the concerned authorities to undertake immediate repair and reconstruction work to restore smooth and safe traffic movement on the highway.
