A Bangladeshi national was detained by locals near the India–Bangladesh border under Agartala after alleged illegal entry, leading to tension in the area and subsequent handover to police.
The incident took place in the border zone under Tebaria Border Outpost (BOP) jurisdiction near Airport Police Station area. According to reports, local residents intercepted a young man suspected of crossing the international border without valid documentation.
During a search, locals reportedly recovered ₹10,000 in Bangladeshi currency from his possession. The detained individual identified himself as Bilal Sheikh, claiming to be a resident of Chapai area in Rajshahi district of Bangladesh.
He allegedly stated that he had been working in India and was staying in the Bitarban area while employed in Ramnagar in Agartala. He further claimed that he attempted to cross the border on Sunday night with the help of a broker for ₹8,000 but failed after being chased by Border Security Force personnel.
However, his statements were described by locals as inconsistent and suspicious. According to local sources, there were claims that he was not alone and may have been accompanied by three others.
Residents said they informed personnel at the Tebaria BOP, but alleged a lack of immediate action from the Border Security Force Border Security Force, which led to frustration among locals.
Eventually, the detained individual was handed over to police at Airport Police Station for further investigation. Authorities are expected to verify his identity and examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged illegal entry.
