A 60-year-old man was seriously injured in a bear attack at Bhuban Chowdhury Para under Purba Simna ADC Village in Tripura’s Sepahijala district on Saturday morning, triggering fresh concerns among residents over the animal’s repeated presence in the area.

The injured man, identified as Lalit Debbarma (60), sustained severe injuries when the bear allegedly attacked him and bit the upper part of his left leg, tearing away flesh. He also suffered multiple injuries on different parts of his body.

Following the incident, personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) assisted in rushing the injured man to Katlamara Primary Health Centre. Doctors on duty provided immediate treatment and reportedly administered eight to ten stitches to his wounds before referring him to Agartala for advanced medical care.

According to local sources, the same bear has been roaming freely for a long time in areas including Darogamura, Sarat Chowdhury Para, and Daingya Bari, particularly along the India-Bangladesh border. Residents claim that the animal is frequently spotted in the region during the night.

The latest attack comes barely a month after a woman from Daingya Bari was seriously injured in a similar bear attack. Locals said the woman remains bedridden due to the severity of her injuries.

Residents have expressed frustration over what they describe as the Forest Department’s failure to take effective measures despite repeated complaints. Local resident Rakesh Debbarma alleged that authorities have been informed several times about the bear’s movement, but no concrete steps have been taken to capture or relocate the animal.

He also demanded that the Forest Department bear the full cost of Lalit Debbarma’s treatment. Furthermore, he urged authorities not to take legal action against villagers if they are forced to kill the bear in self-defense in the future.

The series of attacks has created an atmosphere of fear and anxiety in the border villages. Residents are now demanding the immediate rescue and relocation of the bear to prevent further incidents and ensure public safety.
