Tripura Police today handed over the bodies of three Bangladeshi nationals who were mob-lynched yesterday afternoon on suspicion of cattle theft in the Vidyabill area of Khowai District.
According to police sources, a case was registered at Champahaoar Police Station after the three bodies were recovered.
Investigations confirmed that the deceased were Bangladeshi nationals. Following post-mortem examinations, the bodies were handed over to the Bangladesh Police and Border Guards of Bangladesh (BGB) through the Paharura border.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that the deceased allegedly attacked local villagers with sharp weapons, critically injuring two residents while reportedly caught red-handed attempting to steal cattle. In retaliation, an enraged crowd beat the intruders, leading to their deaths on the spot,” police officials said.
The handover ceremony was attended on the Indian side by Assistant Commandant of the 104th BSF Battalion Kundan Kumar, Officer-in-Charge of Khowai Police Station Krishna Dhan Sarkar, Officer-in-Charge of Champahaoar Police Station Dilip Kumar Debbarma, Additional Superintendent of Police, and other officials. Representing Bangladesh, Commandant of the 55th Battalion BGB Company Abul Khair, Officer-in-Charge of Chunarughat Police Station Zahidul Islam, and other officials were present.
The deceased have been identified as Jewel Mia, Pandit Mia, and Sajal Mia. Border security forces on both sides have intensified surveillance to maintain peace along the border.
