Asuli Arya, Secretary of the Department of Official Language in the Ministry of Home Affairs, emphasized on Thursday that the Central government is dedicated to the development of all Indian languages and has no intention of imposing any single language on citizens.
Speaking at a press briefing in Agartala, Arya clarified that individuals are free to use their mother tongue while voicing grievances or interacting with government departments. “There is absolutely no question of language imposition,” she said.
The announcement comes ahead of the visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Agartala on Friday, February 20. He is scheduled to address the North Eastern and Northern Regions Joint Regional Rajbhasha Sammelan at the International Indoor Exhibition Centre in Hapania, Tripura.
Arya highlighted that Hindi has been designated as the official language of India, written in the Devanagari script. “In central government offices, including PSUs and banks, Hindi will serve as the primary official language. Steps such as establishing training institutes, enhancing translation services, and developing software tools have already been implemented to support the promotion of Hindi,” she explained.
She further noted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is focused on building India by 2047 rooted in its cultural heritage, inclusivity, and indigenous traditions. “Both PM Modi and Home Minister Shah communicate in simple Hindi, and Hindi usage is being actively promoted across all ministries,” Arya added.
The Secretary also spoke about the increasing role of artificial intelligence in language development. “The Department of Official Language has introduced AI applications for translation, speech recognition, and real-time processing. Our Bharatiya Bhasa Anubhag has expanded these capabilities. Home Minister Shah’s communications to states are now issued in Hindi, and our software platform ‘Bharti’ currently supports translation in 15 languages, which will be extended to all 22 official languages,” she said.
Officials expect over 3,000 participants at the Rajbhasha Sammelan, which will also include Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, three Members of Parliament, and several other dignitaries.
