The by-election for the Dharmanagar Assembly Constituency in North Tripura concluded today at 5 p.m., recording a robust voter turnout of 80.04%. Polling, which began at 7 a.m., was reported to be peaceful, with no incidents or EVM malfunctions reported.
The by-election became necessary following the passing of BJP MLA and Tripura Legislative Assembly Speaker, Biswabandhu Sen. Returning Officer Debjani Chowdhury confirmed that most polling stations had completed voting smoothly. She added that the electoral process throughout the day was orderly and problem-free.
Six candidates contested the by-election: Jahar Chakraborty (BJP), Chayan Bhattacharya (Congress), Amitabh Datta (CPI(M)), Sanjay Chowdhury (SUCI), independent candidate Brajalal Debnath, and Bibhas Ranjan Das (Amra Bangali).
The constituency has 46,183 eligible voters, comprising 22,380 men, 23,763 women, and 924 newly registered voters. To facilitate smooth polling, 55 polling stations were set up, including 11 model stations and 11 fully managed by women polling staff—a special highlight of this election. “Pink counters” were also arranged to assist women staff.
North District Superintendent of Police Avinash Rais confirmed that the election was conducted peacefully. He noted that security had been strengthened, with personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), Tripura State Rifles, and Tripura Police deployed at all polling stations, along with Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) for rapid response.
