Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath today announced that the state is making a strong move towards solar energy to meet future electricity demands as natural gas reserves dwindle.
Speaking at an awareness camp on the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in Kailasahar, Unakoti District, the Minister said the Dumboor power plant, previously generating 3 MW but damaged in last year’s flood, is being revived to produce 11 MW of power.
“Power in Tripura is generated from gas, air, water, and solar energy. Currently, we rely mainly on gas, but reserves are depleting. Plants like Rukhia, Palatana, Ramchandra Nagar, and Monarchak are already producing less electricity due to the shortage. We must prepare for the future, and that is why the state and central governments are promoting solar energy,” Nath said.
Under the PM Surya Ghar Scheme, launched on February 13, 2024, solar panels can be installed on rooftops and open land, reducing electricity bills and generating additional income for households.
Highlighting consumer participation, the Minister noted that in Kailasahar, only 46.1% of residents currently pay electricity bills. “We are conducting awareness campaigns statewide. Everyone must participate. This is a major initiative. With 10 lakh consumers in the state, we aim to install solar panels in 50,000 households, generating up to 150 MW,” he added.
Stressing inclusivity, Nath said, “People may belong to different political parties, but development must reach everyone, beyond politics.”
