A promising development in Tripura’s Unakoti district is bringing fresh optimism to the farming community, as the efforts of Krishi Vigyan Kendra Unakoti have led to notable success in grape cultivation under local conditions.
The initiative is being implemented with technical and institutional support from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and the National Research Centre for Grapes, with financial assistance facilitated through the NABARD. Together, these organizations are working to introduce scientifically backed horticultural practices in the region.
The project is being guided by horticulture scientist Dr. Ratan Das, who noted that grapes can be successfully cultivated in Unakoti’s climate when modern techniques, proper crop management, and scientific care are applied consistently.
According to project findings, early experimental plantations have shown encouraging results, suggesting strong potential for future expansion. These outcomes are also opening up new income possibilities for local farmers, particularly those looking to diversify beyond traditional crops.
To support adoption, KVK teams are actively conducting training programs, providing hands-on technical guidance, and assisting farmers with cultivation practices suited to local conditions. The growing interest among farmers reflects a shift toward high-value horticulture in the district.
Officials and agricultural experts believe that if scaled properly, grape cultivation could become a viable alternative crop in Unakoti, contributing to improved farm incomes and broader agricultural diversification in the region.
