In response to a series of complaints regarding healthcare services at the North Tripura District Hospital, Tripura Health Secretary Kiran Gitte carried out a surprise inspection in Dharmanagar today.
The visit was aimed at assessing the hospital’s overall infrastructure and quality of services and identifying areas requiring immediate attention.
During the inspection, the Health Secretary visited the Outpatient Department (OPD), Emergency Department, and several hospital wards. He also held a review meeting with hospital authorities, doctors, officials from the Public Works Department, and North Tripura District Magistrate and Collector Chandni Chandran. The meeting focused on improving healthcare services and addressing infrastructural deficiencies at the hospital.
The inspection comes amid growing public dissatisfaction over the hospital’s functioning. Patients and local residents had raised concerns about long waiting times, inadequate medical services, poor cleanliness, a non-functional water purification system, shortage of doctors, and alleged illegal activities within the hospital premises. Complaints were also made regarding the outsourcing of blood sample testing to private laboratories and the lack of access to safe drinking water.
To verify the allegations firsthand, the Health Secretary conducted an on-site assessment of the hospital facilities. Speaking to reporters after the visit, Gitte reiterated the state government’s commitment to providing quality healthcare services and directed the District Magistrate to take necessary steps to address the identified shortcomings at the earliest.
He further informed that the government is planning several initiatives to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in the region. These include the establishment of a separate Sub-Divisional Hospital in Dharmanagar, modernization of the district hospital, operationalization of a Trauma Centre, launch of an Intensive Coronary Care Unit (ICCU), and expansion of specialized healthcare services.
The Health Secretary also noted that a Cancer Day Care Centre has already been made operational at the hospital.
Local residents have welcomed the surprise inspection, viewing it as an important step toward improving healthcare services and addressing long-standing issues at the North Tripura District Hospital.
Following his visit to North Tripura District Hospital, the Health Secretary also inspected the Unakoti District Hospital.
