The West Tripura district administration has imposed strict restrictions on the movement of heavy motor vehicles along the embankments of the Howrah River in Agartala to ensure the structural safety of the riverbanks.
According to a notification issued by the Office of the District Magistrate and Collector of West Tripura, heavy vehicles — including four-wheelers, six-wheelers, trucks, tempos, buses and minibuses — are prohibited from plying on the embankments along the Howrah River and the Katakhal area. The restriction has been imposed to prevent potential structural damage to the embankments caused by excessive load.
The order has been issued under Sections 30 and 34(b) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, and has come into effect immediately.
District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar stated that the decision was taken as the continuous movement of heavy vehicles could weaken the embankments and pose a risk to their structural stability.
The administration has warned that strict action will be taken against violators. As per the order, police authorities have been instructed to immediately seize any vehicle found violating the directive and produce it before the District Magistrate, indicating a zero-tolerance approach by the administration.
The Superintendent of Police, traffic authorities and officials of the Public Works Department have also been directed to ensure strict enforcement of the order and to spread awareness among the public regarding the restrictions.
The district administration has appealed to residents and commuters in Agartala to cooperate with the directive in order to ensure public safety and protect vital infrastructure.
