The long-awaited development of the Howrah River waterfront in Agartala has reached completion, paving the way for its formal inauguration by Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on September 22.
Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Dipak Majumder inspected the newly developed riverfront and reviewed the preparations ahead of the inauguration. He said the transformation of the 1.7-km stretch along the Howrah River has been undertaken under the Smart City Mission at a cost of more than Rs 96 crore.
The project has transformed what was once a largely neglected and garbage-filled stretch into a modern public recreational space. The redeveloped area features landscaped parks, greenery and civic amenities aimed at making the riverfront more accessible and enjoyable for children, senior citizens and residents of all age groups.
According to the Mayor, the area had previously been used extensively for dumping waste, contributing to pollution and creating an unhealthy environment along the riverbank. The redevelopment has not only improved the appearance of the area but has also created a cleaner and more organised public space for the people of Agartala.
Majumder said the project incorporates a range of features showcasing different varieties of plants, elements reflecting the heritage of the area and modern recreational facilities designed with future generations in mind.
He expressed his appreciation to the Smart City Mission, officials of Agartala Smart City Mission Limited, the AMC Commissioner, corporators and local residents for their cooperation in bringing the ambitious project to completion. He acknowledged that the implementation faced several challenges and obstacles, but said coordinated efforts by the government, municipal corporation and citizens helped overcome them.
The Mayor also noted that local residents have already begun visiting the newly developed riverfront ahead of its official opening and have expressed satisfaction with the transformation.
At the same time, Majumder appealed to citizens to play an active role in protecting and maintaining the newly created infrastructure.
“Government assets are created for the people, and it is equally important that people protect these assets,” he said, urging residents to cooperate in keeping the riverfront clean and preserving the facilities for public use.
The project is expected to provide Agartala with a new recreational destination while adding a major public space to the city's urban landscape.
