In a remarkable medical success, a 10-month-old baby girl has been given a new lease on life following a complex and life-saving procedure performed free of cost at Agartala Government Medical College and GB Pant Hospital.
The infant, identified as Arpita Shil, accidentally inhaled a small lead bulb while playing at her home in Kakraban, Gomati district, on April 18. The incident caused sudden coughing and severe breathing difficulties, prompting her parents to rush her to Gomati District Hospital around 1:00 PM. Considering the seriousness of her condition, doctors immediately referred her to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala.
She was admitted to the ENT department at approximately 3:30 PM the same day, where specialists quickly began evaluation. Based on diagnostic findings, Head of the Department, ENT specialist Prof. (Dr.) Biplab Nath confirmed the presence of a foreign object lodged in the child’s right bronchus (airway).
Given the critical condition and the extremely small size of the infant’s airway, the situation was highly complex. Dr. Nath decided to proceed with an emergency procedure under general anesthesia to remove the object. A specialized medical team was formed to carry out the delicate operation.
Using bronchoscopy, the team successfully removed the lead bulb from the child’s airway despite the high level of difficulty and risk involved. The procedure required precise coordination, especially in administering anesthesia to such a young patient.
The surgery team included Dr. Debolina Dey, Dr. Dipshikha Bhattacharjee, Dr. Sukumar Debnath, Dr. Tanmoy Deb, and Dr. Bagdatta Pal. The anesthesia team comprised Dr. Bhaskar Majumdar, Dr. Chirashree Chowdhury, Arpita Chowdhury, and Dr. Swapan Debbarma, along with OT nurses and technicians.
Following the successful operation, the child gradually recovered and was discharged from the hospital on April 21.
The infant’s family expressed deep gratitude to the doctors and healthcare staff for their timely intervention and compassionate care, especially noting that the life-saving treatment was provided entirely free of cost.
This case highlights both the critical importance of rapid medical response in emergencies and the advanced capabilities available at GB Pant Hospital.
