Amid preparations for the upcoming Village Council elections in Tripura, Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) General Secretary Swapan Debbarma was allegedly assaulted by supporters of the Tipra Motha Party at Hezamara on Tuesday, according to party sources.

Debbarma was reportedly travelling towards Khowai district when the alleged incident took place.

The development has drawn a strong reaction from Tripura Cooperative Minister and senior IPFT leader Shukla Charan Noatia, who condemned the alleged attack and expressed concern over the incident.

In a statement, Noatia said he was “deeply shocked” by the alleged assault and described the incident as unacceptable political violence.

He pointed out that the IPFT, BJP and Tipra Motha are alliance partners in the state government and are jointly contesting the upcoming Village Council General Election.

“Such acts of aggression directly undermine the very spirit of our unity,” Noatia said, while appealing for an immediate end to political violence.

The Minister urged workers and supporters of all alliance partners to exercise restraint and maintain peace throughout the election process. He also appealed to political parties to ensure that differences of opinion do not escalate into violence.

Noatia stressed the need for a peaceful and democratic atmosphere during the elections and called upon all stakeholders to uphold the spirit of the alliance and ensure that the electoral process proceeds without disruption.
