A coalition partner in the state government, the Indigenous Peoples’ Front of Tripura (IPFT), has publicly expressed its displeasure regarding the role of Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha in the ongoing debate over the Roman script issue.

Addressing the media, IPFT General Secretary Swapan Debbarma said that the matter of using the Roman script is deeply tied to the emotions and cultural identity of the tribal communities. Given its sensitivity, he stressed that the Chief Minister should avoid making public statements on the subject.

Debbarma pointed out that the Roman script issue has long been a source of confusion and discontent within the state. “Unless there is a permanent resolution to this issue,” he said, “no government can remain in power for long.” He also recalled that in the past the Left Front government suffered politically for not taking a clear stand on the matter.

“The Roman script question is extremely sensitive and closely connected with the sentiments of the tribal society,” Debbarma said. “Since Chief Minister Manik Saha is a native Bengali speaker, he should refrain from commenting on this issue in public.”

The IPFT leader’s remarks reflect rising tensions among indigenous groups over language and script usage, a topic that has become a significant political flashpoint in the state.
