Teliamura MLA and Chief Whip of the State Legislative Assembly, Kalyani Saha Roy, paid a surprise visit to Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital on Saturday following long-standing allegations of mismanagement and irregularities at the healthcare facility.
During the inspection, several administrative lapses and deficiencies in healthcare services reportedly came to light, raising fresh concerns about the functioning of the hospital. Complaints had been circulating for some time regarding the quality of medical services, alleged negligence in the utilization of the Patient Welfare Fund, irregularities related to essential medicines and vaccines, staff absenteeism, and the alleged presence of middlemen operating within the hospital premises.
According to sources, many of these allegations had been directed at Sub-Divisional Medical Officer Raja Jamatia.
During her visit, the MLA reportedly found that several staff members, including Operation Theatre in-charge doctor Samir Debbarma, were absent from duty without approved leave. She also observed a lack of discipline and administrative shortcomings across various departments of the hospital.
A major concern highlighted during the inspection was the reported lapse of approximately ₹56 lakh from the Patient Welfare Fund. The MLA also expressed concern over complaints related to the management and availability of critical medicines and vaccines.
Sources said that when explanations were sought from SDMO Raja Jamatia regarding these issues, he was unable to provide satisfactory answers, further intensifying questions over the hospital’s administration and oversight mechanisms.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the overall condition of the hospital, Kalyani Saha Roy contacted Health Secretary Dr. Debashree Debbarma directly from the hospital premises and brought the matter to her attention. She also stated that the issue would be raised before Tripura Chief Minister and Health Minister Dr. Manik Saha.
Speaking to the media, the MLA said, “A state of near-anarchy is prevailing at Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital.” She also expressed dissatisfaction over the performance and conduct of certain employees, including LDC Prashanta Sinha and Dr. Samir Debbarma.
Addressing concerns over ambulance availability, Kalyani Saha Roy noted that an ambulance had previously been provided to the hospital through MLA development funds at a cost of around ₹9 lakh. She added that the hospital was also supposed to have another ambulance. If additional requirements arise, she assured that efforts would be made to arrange a new ambulance either through MLA funds or with support from the state government.
The findings of Saturday’s surprise inspection have intensified concerns regarding the quality of healthcare services and administrative management at Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital. Attention will now be focused on the Health Department’s response and the steps taken to investigate and address the allegations.
