The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has intensified its efforts to enhance passenger safety by upgrading conventional ICF coaches with modern Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches equipped with state-of-the-art fire detection and suppression systems.

According to officials, 1,223 LHB AC coaches have been fitted with Fire and Smoke Detection Systems (FSDS), while 148 power cars and 79 pantry cars are now equipped with Fire Detection and Suppression Systems (FDSS). Additionally, 956 AC coaches feature Aerosol-based Fire Detection Systems, designed to provide early alerts in case of fire emergencies.

“These advanced systems continuously monitor critical areas inside coaches, ensuring quick detection and timely intervention to prevent accidents, reduce risks to passengers, and minimize service disruptions,” an NFR spokesperson said.

The railway authority further informed that the installation of fire protection systems in all power cars, pantry cars, and AC coaches is being implemented in a phased manner.

To strengthen safety beyond technology, NFR is also conducting regular safety drives, periodic audits, and inspections to identify and rectify vulnerabilities in asset maintenance and operating procedures.

Reiterating its commitment, NFR emphasized that improving safety is a continuous process and remains its top priority to ensure secure and reliable travel for passengers across the region.
