A red alert has been issued across parts of Tripura as severe weather conditions intensify, bringing the threat of dangerous thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and strong winds over the next few days.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Agartala, a red alert will remain in force from April 28 to April 29 for Khowai and West districts. These areas are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty to squally winds reaching speeds of 60–80 kmph at isolated locations. Heavy to very heavy rainfall, ranging from 7 cm to 20 cm, is also expected.
For the remaining districts, an orange alert has been issued during the same period. Forecasts indicate thunderstorms, lightning, and winds of 50–60 kmph, along with isolated spells of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
The warning continues into April 29–30, when an orange alert will cover all districts of the state. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of up to 60 kmph are expected statewide. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in North, Unakoti, Dhalai, Khowai, and West districts, while other areas may receive heavy rainfall between 7 cm and 11 cm.
From April 30 to May 1, the orange alert remains in place, particularly for North, Unakoti, Dhalai, Khowai, and West districts. Thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rainfall are expected to persist during this period.
This alert follows intense weather activity already recorded across the state. A severe nor’wester recently brought widespread rainfall and strong winds. Dhalai district recorded the highest rainfall at 159 mm, along with wind speeds reaching 111 kmph. Unakoti received 118.4 mm of rainfall with winds of 57 kmph, while Khowai recorded 121 mm of rainfall and wind speeds of 89 kmph. North district saw 105.5 mm rainfall with winds at 72 kmph, and West district reported 61.4 mm rainfall with wind speeds of 74 kmph.
Other districts also experienced significant rainfall, though comparatively lower. Sepahijala recorded 53.2 mm, Gomati 29 mm, and South district 24 mm, all accompanied by moderate wind speeds.
Authorities have urged residents to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel during storms, and take necessary precautions against lightning and strong winds, as the severe weather pattern is expected to continue over the coming days.
