Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Saturday emphasized the importance of regular yoga practice in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, stating that yoga not only improves physical fitness but also strengthens immunity and mental well-being.

Addressing the state-level celebration of the 12th International Yoga Day at the International Exhibition Hall in Hapania, the Chief Minister highlighted yoga's growing global acceptance and its role in enhancing productivity and reducing stress.

The event was organized jointly by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports and the National AYUSH Mission.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Saha said that Yoga Day has been celebrated across the state for the past several years and noted that June 21 has been observed worldwide as International Yoga Day since 2015.

“Yoga signifies union and helps individuals understand and connect with themselves. It has been an integral part of India's heritage for centuries, practiced by sages since ancient times,” he said.

The Chief Minister recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had proposed the observance of International Yoga Day at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2014. The proposal received support from 177 countries and was adopted without a vote, paving the way for its global recognition.

Referring to this year's theme, ‘Yoga for Healthy Aging’, Dr. Saha said yoga plays a crucial role in maintaining physical and mental health throughout life.

“People who practice yoga regularly are less likely to fall ill. It improves blood circulation, increases flexibility, sharpens concentration, and contributes significantly to overall well-being,” he said.

He also stressed the need to encourage younger generations to adopt yoga as part of their daily routine.

“In today's digital age, children are spending more time on mobile phones. It would be beneficial if they dedicated some time to yoga, which can greatly improve their concentration and mental focus,” he added.

Dr. Saha further stated that yoga, meditation, and pranayama help reduce mental stress and boost immunity, making them essential practices for a balanced and healthy life.

Appealing to citizens to embrace yoga regularly, the Chief Minister said that integrating yoga into daily life can lead to better health, improved performance, and enhanced quality of life.

The programme was attended by Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Tinku Roy, MLA Mina Rani Sarkar, Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha, Secretary of the Youth Affairs and Sports Department P.K. Chakraborty, Director General of Police Anurag, and other senior government officials.
