Residents of Laltila in Khowai subdivision blocked the Ramchandraghat–Dholabil road for six hours on Tuesday, demanding urgent repairs to what they described as a “death trap.”

The road, built just three months ago by the Khowai Public Works Department (PWD), has already deteriorated due to the constant movement of trucks carrying 35–40 tons of stone—well above the road’s 10-ton capacity. Massive potholes have left the stretch nearly impassable, locals alleged.

Villagers said they had earlier stopped several trucks and allowed them to move only after drivers promised to fill potholes with stones during return trips. However, as these assurances went unfulfilled, residents resorted to a blockade from 9 am to 3 pm.

Despite the protest, locals claimed no senior official from the PWD or the administration reached the spot, except for police personnel deployed to maintain order.

“Every day these overloaded lorries are destroying our roads, and the administration is just watching. If this continues, all roads in the subdivision will collapse,” said one of the protesters.

Residents have warned they will not allow stone-laden trucks to pass unless repairs are carried out within 24 hours. The incident has triggered public anger over what many see as official apathy towards recurring road damage caused by overloaded vehicles.
