Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday paid heartfelt tributes to the Indian Navy on the occasion of Navy Day, lauding the force for its bravery, discipline, and relentless dedication to protecting the nation’s maritime borders.

Sharing his greetings on X, the Chief Minister wrote:“On #NavyDay, we salute the courage, discipline and unmatched commitment of our Naval warriors who keep India's seas safe, strong and sovereign. From our vast coastline to the farthest oceans, our Nation stands proud of their unwavering service and sacrifice.”

Sarma’s message echoed the sentiments expressed nationwide as leaders and citizens acknowledged the Navy’s crucial role in ensuring maritime security, safeguarding trade routes, and carrying out humanitarian missions across the Indo-Pacific.

Navy Day, observed annually on December 4, commemorates Operation Trident, the daring 1971 naval strike on Karachi harbour during the Indo-Pak war. Executed on the night of December 4, the operation saw Indian missile boats inflict heavy damage on Pakistan’s naval assets, marking one of the most decisive victories in the country’s maritime history.

Over the years, the Indian Navy has evolved into a powerful blue-water force capable of operating across distant oceans. Its duties include securing India’s 7,500 km coastline, protecting island territories, ensuring the safety of sea lanes, and strengthening international maritime cooperation through joint exercises and defence partnerships.

The Navy also spearheads major humanitarian and disaster-relief operations, including evacuations during international crises and assistance during cyclones and tsunamis.

In recent times, the force has increasingly focused on indigenisation under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, with warships, submarines and advanced maritime systems being developed in Indian shipyards.

Officials noted that CM Sarma’s message reflects a deep appreciation for the Navy’s indispensable role in national security and its rising significance in the strategic landscape of the Indian Ocean Region.
