The by-election for the 56 Dharmanagar Assembly Constituency in Tripura’s North District is scheduled for April 9, with polling set from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Six candidates are contesting the seat, making it a closely watched electoral battle in the region.
The by-election became necessary following the demise of MLA and Speaker Biswabandhu Sen.
Speaking to reporters, Tripura CEO Brijesh Pandey outlined the election schedule, stating that campaigning will officially end on April 7 at 5:00 PM, after which a mandatory 48-hour silence period will be observed. During this period, all public meetings, rallies, and campaign activities are strictly prohibited under election regulations.
According to official figures, the constituency has 46,142 registered voters, including 22,384 male and 23,758 female electors. Additionally, there are 91 service voters, with 88 males and 3 females. The election will be conducted across 55 polling stations, 32 in urban areas and 23 in rural areas, spread over 42 locations—23 urban and 19 rural. Special arrangements include 11 women-managed polling stations, 2 PwD-managed polling stations, 2 youth-managed polling stations, and 11 model polling stations.
Authorities have ensured that all polling stations are well-equipped with drinking water, proper lighting, ramps for persons with disabilities, toilets, and shaded waiting areas for voters.
To ensure transparency and law enforcement, 75 micro observers (including reserves) have been deployed. Security arrangements include six naka points, 24 static surveillance teams, 12 flying squads, and video monitoring teams. Polling staff will be dispatched from Dharmanagar Government Girls’ School to their respective polling and counting centers, and strong rooms have been secured with adequate protection.
The administration has also declared a dry day from April 7 to April 9. As per election rules, canvassing within 100 meters of any polling station is strictly prohibited, though candidates may set up election booths beyond this distance with limited arrangements. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.
