In a major preparatory step ahead of the next phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed the Chief Electoral Officers of 22 states and Union Territories   including Tripura  to complete all groundwork for the exercise, which is expected to begin in April 2026.

The Commission’s letter, issued on 19 February 2026 by Secretary Pawan Diwan, reminded electoral officials that the nationwide SIR exercise was ordered last year and that pre‑revision activities should be expedited. Preparatory work includes finalising logistics, training Booth Level Officers (BLOs), gathering required documentation, and ensuring voter awareness at the grassroots.

Tripura  which is part of the northeastern cluster alongside Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Sikkim called out by the poll panel  must complete these preparatory tasks “at the earliest,” according to the directive.

The SIR process, aimed at updating and cleaning the electoral rolls by removing ineligible entries and ensuring only eligible voters remain registered, has already been completed in Bihar and is currently underway in several other states and Union Territories. Once Tripura and the other 21 regions finish their groundwork, the Commission expects the revised electoral roll exercise to begin simultaneously across the country.
